UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination
Eligibility
Age 21–32 years. Master's degree in the relevant discipline — Geological Science/Geology for Geologist, Physics/Applied Geophysics for Geophysicist, Chemistry for Chemist, and Geology/Applied Geology/Marine Geology for Junior Hydrogeologist. The specific degree list varies per post. .
Selection Process
Stage-I — Preliminary Examination
Objective, one day. Paper-I is General Studies, common to all streams; Paper-II is the candidate's own subject (Geology & Hydrogeology, Geophysics or Chemistry). Screening only — marks do not count toward the final merit.
Stage-II — Main Examination
Descriptive papers in the chosen stream, held over two days. These marks carry into the final merit list.
Stage-III — Personality Test
Interview at UPSC Bhavan for candidates who clear Stage-II.
About UPSC CGSE
Recruits Geologists, Geophysicists and Chemists for the Geological Survey of India (Ministry of Mines) and Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B) for the Central Ground Water Board (Ministry of Jal Shakti). Unlike most UPSC exams this one is discipline-gated rather than open to any graduate: candidates compete inside a single stream (Geology, Geophysics, Chemistry or Hydrogeology) and sit that stream's papers only.
